I don’t remember my very first day of school. I do know that my mom set my hair in curlers and dressed me up in a new outfit before sending me on my way, Monkees lunchbox in hand, to walk with my sisters to school. I can’t remember the name of any of my teachers from the three years I attended this school. However, I do remember the candy store that was on the way home. Leon’s, my sister tells me, was the name of the store. We often stopped there on our way home. The man behind the counter referred to everyone who came in as Mary. In my mind I can still hear his oft-repeated phrase, “Come on, Mary, come on.” I imagine it takes a great deal of patience to sell penny candy to children.
Why, you may ask, is she rambling on about her first years of school? The answer is simple. That school was located in Pawtucket, R.I., and in a few weeks I will be heading to Providence, R.I., to attend the New England Regional Turfgrass Foundation Conference & Show, my first show for this industry.
This will be a chance for me to get a first glance of all the new products being introduced; to talk to the manufacturers to find out what research is being done and what products are in the works for the near future; and a chance to finally meet some of you.
Stop by booth #136 and tell me what you like, and don’t like, about the magazine, and what you’d like to see more of in upcoming issues. I’m also on the lookout for superintendents who are willing to be part of our Report From the Course feature. You can read the premier Report From the Course from the February issue online at www.SuperintendentMagazine.com, and turn to page 18 for the latest report.
For those of you not in the New England region, give me a call, send an e-mail or write a letter. This is your magazine, and I need to hear from you in order to create an informative and interesting product every month.
If you can’t make it to a show this year, but still would like the opportunity to talk to your peers, log on to SuperintendentSite.com. This is a great way to connect with other superintendents, whether you have questions about irrigation or want feedback on a piece of equipment or product you’re interested in trying on your course. You can post a job opening, show off some pictures of your course or discuss any other topic that pops into your head. It’s easy to become a member, and it’s free.
See you at the show!
